Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
