Britain and America have agreed to a significant trade agreement that will guarantee zero duties on UK drug shipments being sold in the American market.

The Terms of the Pact

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to boost expenditure on medicines through the public health system. This commitment ensures that duties on these vital goods will be held at zero for a period of the next three years.

This agreement follows earlier threats to hike tariffs on branded drug products, with figures mentioned reaching 100%.

"This deal between the UK reinforces the international landscape for new treatments and introduces long-overdue fairness to transatlantic medicine commerce," a release declared.

Trade Importance

Pharmaceuticals are one of the the United Kingdom's largest goods shipped to the America, which is clearly the largest market for major companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Statistics show that in the year prior to last September, the UK sold medicines valued at £11.1bn to the US. This value represented a significant portion of British export trade in that span.

"This agreement protects employment, increases investment and sets the stage for the UK to become a international leader for life sciences," the Business and Trade Secretary commented.

Key British Pledges

The deal involves several specific commitments from the British government:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will lift the price threshold at which it considers new therapies to be unaffordable by twenty-five percent.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a goal to double total public funding on medicines from 0.3 percent of GDP to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Rebate Cap: The sum manufacturers must pay back to the NHS to control costs will be limited at 15%. Previously, rebates topped twenty percent.

Broader Context

This agreement takes place against a long-running row between the drug companies and the UK government over drug pricing and regulatory access.

These tensions were exacerbated by arguments that American customers were charged several times more for the equivalent treatments than consumers in the UK and Europe.

Recently, several large pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been delayed or scrapped, while substantial funding commitments have been announced toward US facilities.

A senior figure publicly accepted that the NHS had to invest a greater share on treatments, noting that its expenditure on drugs had shrunk as a proportion of its overall budget over the last ten years.
