No fewer than 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
