Bolsonaro arrested after being deemed a risk of fleeing

The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in September and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is located around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will have a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
